What changed in January 2026
Instagram moved the profile grid from square tiles to 3:4 portrait tiles. Every post's grid thumbnail is now a centered 3:4 crop of the image, whatever ratio you posted. The post itself is untouched; only the grid preview is cropped.
What survives the crop
A square (1:1) post keeps 75% of its width in the tile: anything within 12.5% of the left or right edge is cropped out of the grid. A 4:5 portrait post keeps about 94% of its width. A 3:4 post displays whole, and a 1.91:1 landscape post loses most of its width. Keep headlines, logos and faces inside the centered zone this checker outlines.
Fix it at the template, not per post

What does Instagram actually crop on the profile grid?
The profile grid shows a 3:4 tile. A square post loses the top and bottom, and a 4:5 portrait post is cropped less but still trimmed, so anything near an edge can be cut in the grid even though the post itself is fine.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is read in your browser and drawn to a canvas. It is never sent to a server.
What should I do with the safe zone?
Keep text, faces and logos inside it. The post still shows in full when someone opens it; the safe zone is about what survives on the grid, which is what a visitor to your profile sees first.
